Featured Locations: Biddeford, ME

Outside of Maine, Biddeford is probably known best as the site of the University of New England, but locally Biddeford has a reputation as the cooler, cozier, more affordable cousin to the much bigger and pricier Portland. The community calendar here is swimming in culture and artists are not just welcome but truly appreciated. You can practically smell the ocean and every day is a good day for a hike, which makes working in Biddeford one of the most satisfying things a traveling behavior health professional could add to an already rewarding career.

Points Of Interest

Wood Island Lighthouse

During World War II, the Wood Island Lighthouse was a military headquarters housing artillery batteries from the Maine National Guard. These days, you’re more likely to run across relaxed tourists worshipping the sun or hardworking lobstermen dragging in their hauls.

East Point Audubon Sanctuary

It’s about six miles from downtown Biddeford to Biddeford Pool, a large tidal basin surrounded by salt marshes and coastal wildlife. There you’ll find the East Point Audubon Sanctuary, a short but mesmerizing trail that provides a clear view of the rocky shoreline, Wood Island Lighthouse and the many birds that nest in proximity to the pool.

Things To Do

Every year, Biddeford residents fete the town’s French-American heritage with La Kermesse Franco-Americaine Festival, a get-together that includes carnival rides, fireworks, a parade, and of course tons of vendors and events.

There are about 196 sunny days in Biddeford each year, leaving plenty of opportunities for locals to get outside and soak up the fresh air. Aquaboggan Water Park in nearby Saco is an all-ages attraction with a wave pool, water slides, and mini golf. Ferry Beach State Park is open from Memorial Day until September 30. In addition to sunbathing and swimming, visitors can hike a network of trails that crisscross through swamplands and all kinds of native Maine vegetation.

Biddeford gets an infusion of culture from the City Theater. Community theater events and offerings from the University of New England Players take place year-round in this historic landmark building, with the schedule including everything from Shakespeare plays to operas to lectures.
